U-Suit Premium protects your MacBook Air

Written by Brenda Stokes on Thursday, December 4th, 2008 in News.

uniea-300x225A lot of people who own MacBooks tend to want to show them off. However, if you’re finding you need to protect your precious MacBook Air from bumps and scratches, you might be interested in the U-Suit Case.

The U-Suit covers up your MacBook Air and keeps it protected. However, it looks remarkably like a Dell Inspiron, doesn’t it? Kind of strange, don’t you think? But hey, at least you can still see the Apple insignia poking through the clear part.

Make by Uniea, the U-Suit Premium is available in both red and black color options. It is resistant to scratches and can hold up against most impacts. You can get this case now for $69.95, which is quite expensive, but most computers are an investment, so this can just go toward securing it further for you.

Amazon.com launches iPhone App

Written by Shane McGlaun on Thursday, December 4th, 2008 in News.

Amazon iPhone AppMany who shop online head to Amazon when it comes time to buy. Amazon has one of the largest product inventories online and makes shopping fast and easy. Amazon is always looking to make shopping on its site easier for users and has announced its first iPhone App.

The Amazon app will work on the iPhone and the iPod touch. Using the app users can browse the Amazon inventory, view Customer Reviews, and buy using Amazon’s 1-click Shopping and Amazon Prime.

The coolest feature of the app is offered on the iPhone and is called Amazon Remembers. The application lets iPhone users snap a picture of products using the built-in camera. The photo is then sent to Amazon and it looks for the product or similar products that can be purchased or remembered for purchase later. If you see someone using a cool notebook, you take a picture of it and Amazon will try to find more info on it for you.

Participating artists include Theo Watson, Aram Bartholl, Evan Roth, Dragan Espenschied, Timo Klok, Jamie Wilkinson, Danja Vasiliev and Tobi Leingruber. DIY Daft Punk helmet

Written by Collin Cunningham on Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008 in News.

Likely a huge hit at any Halloween party it attended, Casey Pugh's Daft Punk helmet -

It's a 16x5 LED matrix installed inside a cheap motorcycle helmet I found on Amazon. I used the Arduino to program all the animations. (arduino.cc)

The LEDs are on cardboard, so I punched holes between every single LED and some larger slits around the sides in order to see out.

Straight-up awesome. [via Synthtopia]

Nintendo DS taps into e-reader market

Written by Christian Milsom on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008 in News.

DS100classicbooksOne of the growing markets within the tech world at the moment is the e-reader, a futuristic answer to the book.  Lots of manufacturers are getting in on the act following in the footsteps of the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Readers, it was only a matter of time till portable consoles caught up with this trend.  It would appear that Nintendo is ready to go the e-reader route with their first eBook software allowing you read books on your DS.

The DS would seem like a good solution: it is small, it has a touch screen, it can connect to the Internet and many people have them which translates to a large user base.

Nintendo’s offering is miles behind Amazon and Sony on so many levels.  Firstly, you are limited to a choice of the 100 books that come on the card which instantly puts you behind the thousands of novels, magazines, and newspapers that the e-readers have.  Secondly, and most crucially, the only reason that these books are available is because they are out of copyright, so don’t expect anything written in this century.

Look at the size difference between a DS screen and a book and you will see that the DS is tiny in comparison which will make reading harder on the eye.  This is something that is perhaps easy to overlook now, but when you have to “turn the page” every sentence it is not so good.  Also the Wi-Fi function is utterly awful, merely allowing you download 10 different books which are probably classics as well (so why didn’t they just put them on the software?) and rate the books.

Now, it’s not all bad.  If you already have a DS then this is a great way to get to know some classic novels made especially easy by the search function that allows you to look for specific phrases.  This, coupled with the ability to zoom and turn pages with the stylus, makes it fun for children as well, and the $27 price tag isn’t bad either.

Asus Eee PC 1002HA now available with US retailers

Asus Eee PC 1002HA now available with US retailers

As we expected, the Eee PC 1002HA has begun showing up with US based retailers.  The 1002HA appears to be replacing the now fast dwindling 1000H and is retailing for around $500.  Of course, as of now, these listings are simply for pre-order but they are expected to begin shipping shortly.

The Eee PC 1002HA offers the nice brushed metal design that is found on the S101 and as for features it has a 10-inch display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n.  Based on the specification listing it seems the one item that is lacking is built-in Bluetooth.  Otherwise, another potential drawback is that it is shipping with a small 2-cell battery.  If you are looking for something with similar specs and a larger battery, you can always check out the 1000HA, that model is available for around $430 and ships with a 6-cell battery.

Nokia’s unlocked N85 now available with Amazon

Nokia's unlocked N85 now available with Amazon

We first saw the reports that the Nokia N85 would be heading to the US a few months back and now it looks like it has almost made an appearance.  Well, technically it is available for you to purchase.  However it is currently listed with a 2 to 4 week shipping time, so it will be a little while before you will have it in-hand.  The listed N85 comes in Copper and is unlocked for use in the US.  The one drawback here is the price—$555.59.

Of course, while it sounds expensive, it really is not out of the normal price range for unlocked phones, it is also much nicer looking than the $1,200 list price.  Given that, it almost seems like you are getting a bargain.  Just as a refresher, the Nokia N85 features a 5-megapixel camera, GPS, Wi-Fi and has a 2.6-inch AMOLED QVGA display.  It is also running S60 and has support for 3G.

Amazon Kindle sold-out, refurbs available in limited quantities

Written by Robert Nelson on Monday, December 1st, 2008 in News.

Section: Gadgets / Other, Miscellaneous

Anyone looking to pick up an Amazon Kindle for the holidays seems to be out of luck as Amazon has once again sold out of the Kindle.  Current expected shipping times for a new Kindle are being listed as “11 to 13 weeks” and given that, some may start looking for alternate ways to make a purchase.

Amazon is offering, when available, refurbished models that are selling for $329.  Not much of a discount, but with such a popular item I guess that is a fair price.  Of course, as of this posting even those are sold out as well.  However, there are some alternative methods, but as you can expect, they are not going to be cheap.  The Amazon marketplace currently has some “used - like new” models that are available, which are priced anywhere from $500 even up to $1,500.

Finally, for those that are really desperate, there is always eBay.  Heck, with prices like this, I am almost tempted to part with mine.
